On the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano lies Guayabo National Monument, the most significant archaeological discovery in Costa Rica: ancient pre-Columbian ruins set in the middle of a sacred rainforest. These are the ruins of an ancient city of approximately 20,000 inhabitants covering 49 acres which was abandoned in AD1400, probably because of disease or hunger.


Turrialba is in the center of Little Switzerland, an area so named for its resemblance to Switzerland with many beautiful mountain vistas, waters falls and cows used to produce the famous local cheeses. Although “Turrialba Cheese generally refers to a white, runny cheese that is not aged, there are several producers of other cheeses that resemble those of Switzerland and other parts of Europe. In and around Little Switzerland are found several important tourist sites. In fact it is said that there are more tourist sites in this area than in any other part of Costa Rica.
