The State of Hidalgo, in central Mexico, stands proud of its history and invites you to explore it. You can visit its archaeological sites such as Tula, Huapalcalco and Xihuingo; get to know its museums and ex-convents, witnesses of the evangelization process which took place after the arrival of the Spaniards; enjoy the hot springs of its bathing resorts, and spoil your palate with its rich cuisine. Named in 1869, to honor Don Miguel Hidalgo, the “Father of the Nation”, this beautiful state has a mining tradition which goes back to pre-Hispanic times, and which today is still reflected in several of its communities. Its capital, Pachuca, also known as “The Beautiful Windy City” (“La Bella Airosa”) due to the strong winds blowing across it, welcomes its visitors with the resounding peals of its Monumental Clock, mounted on a neoclassical pink stone tower, with a mechanism similar to that of Big Ben in London. Right on the central plaza, buildings such as the Cajas Reales, the exquisitely decorated ex-convent of St. Francis, which now houses the Hidalgo Cultural Centre, maintained by the INAH, and the National Photographic Library, as well as the House of Count Rul, built in the English Victorian style, reveal the splendor of the mining and the economic power which the exploitation of ore deposits gave to the city. The State of Hidalgo is protected by the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Valley of the Meztitlán, thus boasting a mild climate year round, ranging between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade. This mild temperature is perfect for enjoying a dip in the region’s various bathing resorts, as well as taking long walks, bicycle rides, go camping, go on adventure tours, and so much more in its forests and mountains. Hidalgo’s cuisine will grace any table: you will be able to taste its rich food, starting with the famous pastes and continuing with delicious guajillo chile enchiladas served with cured beef or salted meat, cream and cheese. Its cuisine does not forget its pre-Hispanic heritage; you should not miss the chance to try the escamoles (ant eggs) and the gusanos de maguey (maguey worms) served in a taco, with roasted sauce. If you wish to leave behind your stress and worries, allow yourself to be pampered in beautiful former haciendas, now turned into luxury hotels, which, in addition to providing you with an enchanted rest, invite you to discover the secrets of Hidalgo’s history kept within their walls. San Miguel Regla is a good option for letting yourself go, enjoying the pleasure of resting, good food, and a wide range of activities. You can also visit Santa María Regla, a town that surprises visitors, not only because of its beautiful scenery, but also because of the activities in which you can participate, due to its closeness to the incredible shapes of the Basaltic Prisms. Undoubtedly, the State of Hidalgo is an endless source of fun. To enjoy your vacation to the fullest, you should not forget your backpack, a camera and really look forward to using all of your senses to enjoy the different options this place has to offer.
