Fine white sands, crystalline waters, and perfect warm weather are icons of the Riviera Maya; however, despite its appearance as having an ideal climate all year long, there are certain times that you should be warned about. Yes, the temperatures are high all year round, barely fluctuating, but the humidity, rain, and hazardous weather conditions are what cause the major variations throughout the year.

Dry Season: There are basically only two distinct seasons on the Riviera Maya, the wet season and the dry season. The dry season is from November to April; in January and February, strong winds from the north come into the area, called El Norte. Generally, this season has lower, more enjoyable and comfortable temperatures than other times of the year, usually in the 70s. The humidity is lower as well, attracting huge crowds, especially from December to February, when people from further north are trying to escape the cold of winter. Remember that more tourists means higher prices and less relaxation, so those particular months are not very good times to go to the Riviera Maya. March and April are the driest months, but the humidity goes up a little as the dry season comes to a close and the wet season begins. Any other time during the dry season is an excellent time to go enjoy the spectacular beaches, the sunshine, and the Mayan ruins.

 

Wet Season: The wet season occurs from May to October. It's much hotter than the dry season, especially in June and July. Luckily there is a cool breeze off the sea which helps with the heat. The humidity increases as well, making the air uncomfortably sticky. September and October are the rainiest months, sometimes raining for days. High winds and torrential rains are common. The Riviera Maya is in the Atlantic Hurricane Belt, so within the wet season, there is the hurricane season from June to October.

 

It's best to avoid going there during this time as it is very dangerous for obvious reasons. In fact Hurricane Wilma destroyed the area in 2005. It's not common for hurricanes to hit the Riviera Maya directly, but it is possible, and occurs about every 11 or so years. In general, it is not recommended to go to the Riviera Maya during the wet season due to the possibility of major storms, and also because of the rain; No one wants to spend their vacation inside!
