With an estimated total population of about 3.5 million people, Oklahoma is the 28th state in population. 2006/'07 marks the centennial celebration of the statehood of Oklahoma with many events scheduled across the state. Many people in the world associate Oklahoma City with a terriorist act, while others think of the state as the desolate and windswept depression-era landscape described in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. While the former is aware of it's past and celebrates the human sprit discovered from the tragic events of April 19, 1995, the latter is far from true now.
There is a suprising amount to see and do in Oklahoma. With over 50 state parks and 2 National Historic sites, one National Battlefield in Washita, a National park in Chickasaw, seven full-service resorts and 11 challenging golf courses, Oklahoma has a lot to offer year round. Historic Route 66 Highway passes through 48 cities in Oklahoma, so one might say that Oklahoma is the heart of the Mother Road.
With over half a million people in the city and a metropolitan population of over 1.2 million, Oklahoma City is the biggest city in the state and is the state capital. Tulsa is the other urban center with 400,000 people. Both cities offer all the excitement and amenities of other big cities, with lots of outdoor opportunities just around the corner. Bartlesville, just an hour's drive north of Tulsa, is home to Frank Lloyd Wright's Price Tower which was the architect's only skyscraper.
